Why Consider Mike Banks for Planning Board?

Hello Salem, I hope to gain your vote for one of the two open Planning Board seats on March 12th 2019 during the Salem NH Town Elections. I will be running again, this time as an incumbent and I would be honored to gain your support to allow me to serve out the next term as your Planning Board Committee Member. I prepared this website to provide Salem Voters the opportunity to learn more about my background, ambitions, and why I’m running again for Planning Board.

A little about me….

Salem has been home for the last 16 years, along with my wife Tara, and daughter Addison. I’m a current member of the Salem Planning Board since 2018. For the last 3 years to present, I’ve been on Salem’s EDAC Committee – Economic Development Action Committee. Active volunteer with the Salem Rail Trail Corridor-(FSBPC). You’ll find me around town, supporting volunteer activities associated with either the Salem Rail Trail, or with the Salem Knights of Columbus – Council 4442.

Professionally, my 25+ year career in the Telecommunications Industry has cut across many different roles including Management, Project Management, and Capital Planning. The organizational and practical experiences from my professional background, provides the basis to be an effective member of the Planning Board.

I’ve gained insight from other towns and cities where I’ve lived including; Burlington VT, Syracuse NY, and Bracebridge Ontario Canada. And growing up in Bracebridge, I’ve been fortunate to have learned from my Dad, who as a small business owner for 38 years, was an active member of the community, specifically the Business Improvement Association, I gained valuable perspective.

Why do I want to run for a second term on the Salem Planning Board?

Mainly because it’s my civic duty to give-back and invest in Salem, contributing my time and effort to make Salem a better community to work, play and live. Also, I feel that this committee provides the opportunity to efficiently drive economic growth while being respectful of such ‘pain points’ such as traffic on Route 28 and at the Depot.

I will be an advocate for Salem, promoting its advantages as a business friendly hub strategically located Southern New Hampshire. I’ll make every effort afforded to me to ensure that current businesses can grow, and new businesses make Salem their home, while balancing the quality of life for Salem Residents. Finally, my experience on the Planning board in 2018-2019 has been a positive experience and hope you’ll re-elect me for the next term.

What to expect from me as a member of the Planning Board?

Leveraging the Town Ordinances, and Master Plan, I would be both a collaborator and consensus builder with the desire to arrive at solutions which promote sustainable economic growth throughout Salem. I am open to public input, and would listen to the Applicants, Abutters, and Residents. Originally an alternate member, I was appointed as a regular committee member in April 2018. This experience, along with my involvement on the Salem Economic Development Action Committee has helped me understand Salem’s growth potential. This is an exciting time to be a part of Salem. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work for Salem.
